Associate Professor
Dr. Barbieri is associate director of graduate studies and an associate professor in the School of Education at the University of Delaware. Her work is centered on using principles from cognitive and learning sciences to improve mathematics competencies, especially for those who struggle with mathematics. More specifically, Dr. Barbieri’s research program focuses on understanding and implementing the types of opportunities students need to thrive in mathematics classrooms, including the design and effectiveness of instructional tools and climates that foster positive mathematics attitudes.
Dr. Barbieri is the director of the M^3 Lab: Math Methods & Motivation, has served as co-principal investigator on federally-funded Institute of Education Sciences (IES) and National Science Foundation grants and serves on several editorial boards, including the Journal of Educational Psychology and the Journal of Experimental Education. She teaches and advises within the Ph.D. in Educational Statistics and Research Methods program, the Ph.D. in Education program and the B.S.Ed. in Elementary Teacher Education program.
Prior to receiving her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at Temple University, Dr. Barbieri spent several years as an evaluation and assessment analyst for New York State’s Safe Horizon Forensic Interviewing Best Practice Project. She completed postdoctoral training at the University of Delaware through an IES training grant focused on bridging research in education and cognitive science. Throughout her postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate training, she has specialized in analyzing quantitative data, and has completed significant training and coursework using a variety of advanced statistical techniques.
