The College is proud to share its latest issue of CEHD For the Record, a news source highlighting the recent accomplishments of faculty, staff and students from across the School of Education (SOE), Department of Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS) and centers for research, education and service.

CEHD For the Record is published once a semester during the academic year. A call for submissions will be made at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters, with a content deadline of November 15 and April 15, respectively. Dominique Baker, associate professor in the SOE, published several articles:

Roderick L. Carey, assistant professor in HDFS, recently published two articles: 

Sarah Curtiss, assistant professor in the SOE, recently published Where Does Hope Lie? The Dialectical Tensions Between Hopes and Expectations of Vocational Transition Planning from the Perspectives of Autistic Young Adults, Parents, and Practitioners with co-authors Jina Chun, Constance Richard, Kaiqi Zhou, Yazmin Castruita Rios, Sara Park, Jaeyong Kim and Muharrem Koc. This work was featured in UDaily and as part of CEHD’s research spotlight in April, national Autism Acceptance Month. 

Lynsey Gibbons, associate professor in the SOE, published two articles and was featured in the AERA SIG Newsletter:

Myae Han, professor in HDFS, published several articles with Ekaterina Novikova, Stephanie Kuntz, Ariadni Kouzeli, Sharon Davis, Amy Santos and Deborah Drain, Ph.D. in HDFS students. Using their experience in class, Han and her students in HDFS691: Play and Human Development wrote a book chapter on adult play.   

Soo Bin Jang, assistant professor in the SOE, published Methodologizing Transnationality: Relational Writing as Collective Inquiry with co-authors Sun Young Lee, Minhye Son, Taeyeon Kim, Jin Kyeong Jung.

SOE Professor Amanda Jansen’s article, “Rough Draft Talk in Mathematics Classrooms” was recently republished with co-authors Brandy Cooper, Stefanie Vascellaro and Philip Wandless by the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics in the February issue of Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12. The article was originally published in Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School in 2016. 

Eric Layland, assistant professor in HDFS, published “The Public Health Crisis State of Transgender Health Care and Policy” with co-authors Arjee J. Restar, Bee Davis, Hale Thompson and Carl Streed Jr.  

Hye Rin Lee, postdoctoral fellow, published several articles, including some with Teomara Rutherford, associate professor in the SOE:

Rosalie Rolón-Dow, associate professor in the SOE, published “Racialized Emotions as Maps and Compasses for Students of Color Navigating a Predominantly White University” with co-author Janine de Novais. 

Ken Shores, assistant professor in the SOE, published “Contamination in Observational Research on Child Maltreatment: A Conceptual and Empirical Review With Implications for Future Research” with co-authors Chad E. Shenk, Nilam Ram, John M. Felt, Ulziimaa Chimed-Ochir, Anneke E. Olson and Zachary F. Fisher.

Sharon Walpole, professor in the SOE, published “The Effects of Bookworms Literacy Curriculum on Student Achievement in Grades 2-5” with Henry May, associate professor in the SOE, and John Strong, CEHD alum.

Joshua Wilson, associate professor in the SOE, published several articles, including some with Yue Huang, Ph.D. in ESRM student, Fan Zhang, Ph.D. in Education student, Tania Cruz Cordero, Ph.D. in  ESRM student, Matthew Myers Ph.D. in ESRM student, and Andrew Potter, CEHD alum:

Brittany Zakszeski, assistant professor in the SOE, published “Pilot Evaluation of the POWER Program: Positive Outcomes with Emotion Regulation” with co-authors Michelle Cain, Katie Eklund, Lissy Heurich, Reagan Friedman, Ashleigh Ward and Jingwen Zhou. 

Joshua Wilson was awarded funding by the University of Delaware AI Center for Excellence for “CoachGPT: AI-based Scaffolding Tools for Teaching Academic Writing.” (2024, $15,000)

Dominique Baker was invited to speak at several events: 

  • University of Michigan where she presented on critical quantitative perspectives in Ann Arbor in March 2024.
  • The White House where she presented on the racial justice implications of SAVE, the new income-driven repayment plan for student loans in Washington, D.C., in March, 2024.
  • New York University where she presented some of her latest research in April 2024.

Christina Budde, assistant professor in the SOE, was invited to speak at Delaware’s fourth Annual Multilingual Learner Conference virtually in April 2024. 

Myae Han was invited to be a discussant at the American Educational Research Association for the symposium session “The role and impact of leadership development, well-being, and practice in early care and education” in Philadelphia, Pa., in April 2024. 

Amanda Jansen was invited to a number of keynote and guest speaker presentations:

  • Opening keynote speaker at the College Preparatory Mathematics Teacher Conference in Los Angeles, Calif., in February 2024.
  • Opening keynote speaker at the Conversation Among Colleagues Conference (Michigan affiliate of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators) in Dearborn, Mich., in March 2024.
  • Research colloquium at the University of Maryland’s Center for Mathematics Education in College Park, Md., in March 2024.
  • Workshop presenter at the Teachers Development Group Leadership Seminar in Portland, Ore., in March 2024.

Eric Layland was invited to speak in the Prevention Research Seminar Series. They presented, “Integrating a Developmental Approach to Understanding and Eliminating LGBTQ+ Mental Health Disparities” at the University of Maryland in February 2024.

Leigh McLean was invited to speak at the following events:

  • BAM Radio Network Principal Street Podcast: Emotional Intelligence in Education in February 2024.
  • EdWeek K-12 Essentials Forum: How School Leaders can Build Emotional Intelligence in January 2024. 

Sharon Walpole was invited to speak at the Council of Chief State School Officers’ Early Childhood Education Collaborative. She presented “Building capacity among early learning leaders to shape comprehensive early literacy policies” in Chicago, Ill., in May 2023. 

Rosalyn Washington, assistant professor in HDFS, and Aimee Neff, clinical coordinator in HDFS, were invited to speak at the National Field Experience Conference. They presented “Happy Mail and Beyond: Designing Dynamic Family Engagement Experiences for Teacher Candidates” in Greeley, Colo., in March 2024. Washington also presented “Taking Action: Teacher Candidates leveraging the Action Research Cycle” during the conference. 

The CREATEd project—a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-funded project led by Liz Farley-Ripple, professor in the SOE—has worked with eight partner organizations and individuals from across the nation throughout 2023 to develop the Education Knowledge Broker Network. 

  • The Education Knowledge Broker Network is a professional organization designed to meet the needs of knowledge brokers who are creating relationships among research, policy and practice in education and who are collaborating with communities of professionals to identify evidence-based solutions. 
  • This network is intended to formalize and sustain relationships among brokers across the education system; support their professional development, particularly in the areas of addressing justice and equity in education; and promote knowledge brokering as a professional enterprise.
  • Education Knowledge Broker Network had its inaugural meeting with a virtual launch event in March. 
  • Debbie Micklos, Center for Research in Education and Social Policy (CRESP) research coordinator, Carly Hill, CRESP research associate II and consultant Jim Kohlmoos of Edge Partners have contributed much to the development and promotion of the network. 

The Mattering Project—which helps Black boys articulate and understand their worth—is led by Roderick L. Carey with Mark X. Miller, Ph.D. in HDFS student, Sophia Sunshine Vilceus, Ph.D. in Education student, Jana Shelley, Ph.D. in HDFS student and Camila Polanco, Ph.D. in HDFS student. The team is currently partnering with Jarret “Posi” Harris and Joshua Hollingsworth, teaching artists with Wilmington’s Unified Creative Exchange, to paint a large mural with participants at Glasgow High School on the theme of “mattering.” The installation is slated to be completed this spring. 

Kate Riera, assistant professor in HDFS, taught HDFS367: Seminar: Latinx Families & Communities, an experimental community engagement course where students completed fieldwork in community agencies and nonprofits that serve the Latinx community in New Castle County. 

  • Students had the opportunity to work with organizations such as the Latin American Community Center, Las Americas Aspira Academy, Amanecer Counseling & Resource Center, Parents as Teachers, Christina Adult Education ESL Program and Mariposa-Healing through the Arts. 
  • Students also participated in special events including the third annual Pow wow of Arts and Culture at the Delaware Art Museum.  

Roderick L. Carey received the Dr. Carlos J. Vallejo Memorial Award for Emerging Scholarship from the AERA 2024 Multicultural/Multiethnic Education Special Interest Group in April 2024. 

Myae Han has been appointed editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Early Childhood Education.

Eric Layland received the inaugural Rising Star Award from the National Society for Behavioral Medicine HIV and Sexual Health Special Interest Group.

Erica Litke, associate professor in the SOE, was selected as one of the UD Women’s Lacrosse Team’s “Most Valuable Professors” and was honored at the April 27 home game.

Leigh McLean was promoted to associate research professor in December 2023. 

Brittany Zakszeski received the 2023 Outstanding Reviewer Award from School Psychology Review, the flagship journal of the National Association of School Psychologists.

UD 2023-24 Awards

  • Christina Barbieri: 2024 Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising Award 
  • Fred Hofstetter: 2024 Excellence in Teaching Award 
  • Amanda Jansen: 2023 Excellence in Scholarly Community Engagement Award
  • Kenneth Shores: 2023 Gerard J. Mangone Young Scholars Award in the area of social sciences and humanities

Amanda Jansen enjoyed playing in an eight-week-long pinball league in the first quarter of 2024 at the Delaware Pinball Collective.

Erica Litke ran her third Broad Street Run on May 5 as a running leader with Students Run Philly Style and a team of middle school students.

Shelly Silva, digital communications specialist, and her husband Stephen will welcome their first child in May 2024. They are excited to spend the summer with their baby and take in all the first milestones while bonding as a new family of three.
